The Meadow and The Rainbow Room provide a space for those with additional needs within Abbey Mead Primary Academy. The Meadow caters for KS1 aged children, and the Rainbow Room is for EYFS children. Alongside The Meadow, we have another learning space called Horizon Room where children access 1-1 and small group learning with teachers in school as well as those who come in from external agencies to support such as LCI and speech and language therapy. All children have access to our brand new sensory room which we are very grateful to parents who contributed towards this wonderful calming space.
Both spaces provide a range of stimulating activities for children to engage with, focussing primarily on their sensory needs as well as any targets from their EHCP. Some children will spend all day here with a structure approached to learning whereas others will access the rooms at different points throughout the day depending on their needs.
The curriculum in both rooms in the Rainbow Room is based on the EYFS curriculum as well as a personalised learning approach which is tailored to meet the needs of the children. Children in the Rainbow Room also access explorer time in the main EYFS classrooms. Play is a key part of the teaching and learning that happens within The Meadow and The Rainbow room and children benefit from 1-1 play interaction sessions with an adult to develop their play and interaction skills as well as their communication skills, whether that be verbally or using visuals.
