We will provide all of our children with a broad, relevant and enriched curriculum so that they have the character to make a positive contribution to our society and are knowledgeable, skilled and ready for the next phase of their education.

At Abbey Mead, our aim when teaching Design and Technology is to ensure our children receive a curriculum which allows them to exercise their creativity and problem solving, both as individuals and members of a team. We encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to investigate, design, make and evaluate products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Through Design & Technology activities they will become more aware of the modern world and the impact technology has on everyday life.
We teach essential designing and making skills progressively to ensure all children have the opportunity to gradually build on prior knowledge, practice these skills and develop confidence as they move through the school. Design and Technology at Abbey Mead, allows children to apply the knowledge and skills learned in other subjects, particularly Maths, Science and Art. Children’s interests are captured through themed learning, ensuring that links are made in a cross curricular way, giving children motivation and meaning for their learning therefore making it purposeful.
Through the Design and Technology curriculum we aim to provide opportunities for children to further enhance their character development. Risk-taking, resilience, communication, responsibility and team-work are essential life skills and through the Design and Technology sequence of lessons, children will be encouraged to apply these character traits when completing projects. These will particularly support children when using various tools and materials that may be new to them whilst also ensuring children are aware on how to handle tools and equipment’s safely.
