Art

We will provide all of our children with a broad, relevant and enriched curriculum so that they have the character to make a positive contribution to our society and are knowledgeable, skilled and ready for the next phase of their education.

At Abbey Mead, our aim when teaching art is to ensure that our pupils produce creative and imaginative work and take pride in what they have produced. Providing all children with a high-quality art and design curriculum in order to engage and inspire our pupils whilst equipping them with knowledge and various skills. Through Art, we aim to enable pupils to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form and pattern. This will offer our children the chance to use art as a form of expression which goes hand in hand with personal, social and emotional development and give children the opportunity to use art as a means to support their mental health as a form of relaxation..

We aim to provide our children at Abbey the opportunities to explore, experiment, evaluate and invent creative ideas through their own works of art and exploration of skills, crafts and techniques. Art should be taught to inspire and develop our children’s interests and curiosity as well as encouraging our pupils to be reflective and evaluate their work by discussing how they could further improve and make amendments to their work. This will be supported through a series of art lessons which will offer skills and knowledge progression as well as opportunities to be inquisitive and explore by asking questions and demonstrating their skills in a variety of ways.

Through our Art curriculum, we aim to support our children here at Abbey in developing their confidence in various areas of art such as collage, painting, drawing and sculpture. To provide children with a broad understanding of art, we aim to look at the work of different artists as they progress through each year group to broaden their perception of the world, different cultures and how art has helped shape our history.
